I have been working with both of these
bowlers as independents. Mike is one of the most
talented players on the planet. Del is one of the most
experienced bowlers on the same planet. Sometimes when I
watch these guys I think they are visiting another
planet. I don't say that with any disrespect but having
the type of talent and experience that these two have it
sometimes gets in the way of their performance.
Decisions have to be made quickly when you are in
competition and when you have so many options swimming
through your head it is often difficult to stop them
from popping out at the wrong time. One of the things
that most fans don't realize is how many thoughts are
going through a bowlers head in between shots.
Controlling those thoughts are very important.
Developing a solid game plan before the match is the
best way to combat the confusion that will almost always
be a part of transition.
The more options a bowler has the more
important it is to narrow down those options before the
match. It involves a lot of guessing but nothing is
better than experienced guessing. Both players had solid
game plans. Del made a last minute adjustment to his
game plan not 5 minutes before the match that would
allow for an easier transition to follow. His talent is
further seen when you realize I asked him to make a
physical adjustment to how he had been attacking the
lanes. After playing with it for a couple minutes it
made sense to him and his commitment to a game plan is
very important to the success he has been having as of
late.
Mike was struggling with fatigue and
told me he wasn't feeling well in the morning in his
match with Nathan Bohr. He said he was feeling better
now but was tired.
