I was not there but this had to be a very exciting match to watch. Back and forth with out either bowler showing dominance.

Half way through game 6 Danny had built a 30 pin lead and it looked like the see-saw battle would continue. Then in the seventh frame things got a little closer when Danny 6 count opened.

Considering Chris had only struck twice by this time there was no real need to be overly concerned until Danny whiffed a single pin conversion in the 8th and Chris started striking.

Danny may have won the first 6 frames by thirty but Chris won the last 4 frames by 34 to give him an unexpected victory in the game and another opportunity for his first PBA title.

When you look back at this match you see how closely they were statistically.

Danny had 44 total strikes Chris had 41

Danny had 5 open frames Chris had 4

Doubles DW 3  CL 2

Triples DW 5  CL 6

four bagger DW 0 CL 0

five bagger DW 1 CL 1

six bagger DW 2 CL 1

neither bowler had over 6 in a row

Danny doubled in the 10th 3 times Chris once

Everything seemed to side with Danny just slightly but what turned out to be the difference was the spare game. You can look at this great match any way you want and we will never know who would have won in game seven had Danny not missed the single pin in the 8th frame of game 6.

Kids at this level spares you want to have the best spare game on tour. Believe me Danny has a very good spare game, the opportunity to express how important spares are was there and I took it.

I thought this match would come down to transition and it did. Mike did a great job of seeing it and dealing with it.

The lanes were certainly tighter for Mike than expected and in games 2 through 4 he had to switch to a ball he had not used all week (Brunswick BVP Nemesis).

As soon as he saw it start to weeken down lane he made the quick decision to switch to his Brunswick Strike Zone for the last 2 games. Great strategy and quick thinking through transition proved to be the difference.

The next step is to repeat the recognition and adaptation on TV. TV is a totally different environment than most realize.

How many times have we all seen the effects of a 300 game. Time and time again we see a bowler shoot a great game and then struggle afterwards. No matter what level they are at bowlers fall in the same trap.

Paul didn't start bowling bad, He started over thinking trying too hard to keep what he had. When thinks start to look a little different bowlers react instinctively.

Paul is very talented and very intelligent when it comes to ball motion and physical game. The problem is not the knowledge. The problem is avoiding the confusion that goes with it. I do not fault Paul because I know how quickly things can change on tour.

And as I look at the scores closer I think I can see what happened. Walter started each of the last two games with 5 baggers. I can see why Paul would be feeling the need to find more when he was down 40 or 50 pins half way through the game.

I don't think Paul bowled bad I think he got caught by transition that Walter matched up to better than he did.

Yes it was a sweep by Norm but that makes it look worse than it was. In trying to gain something out of the match look at each game. You can see where Brad was in the match most of the time until a disastrous open set him back. Let me tell you something I have learned over the years.

Every bowler goes through it and eventually it becomes personal. They start thinking they are doing something wrong or many other things that have negative effects on their mental approach to the game.

These are times that identify stars and super stars. Do they let the stuff they hear and read effect them or do they get stronger and more determined by it.

You can read and listen to everything you want but the fix is in understanding that "Your job doesn't change" Every time a bowler gets up on the approach his job is simple knock down the pins. It doesn't matter if you are bowling Norm Duke, Walter Ray Williams Jr, Chris Barnes or Joe Bowler.

We can make the game as difficult or as simple as we want it to be. The media and all the other ----stuff that goes along with it is what a bowler at this level is challenged with.

The mental and emotional rush of the sport of bowling is awesome. But with each level of expectations there is a difference in how a bowler handles it. Right now Brad is in that transition phase that every bowler goes through. How long he stays in it is directly related to how simple he can make the game again.

We can turn it into what ever we want to. And when we sit back an analyze the situation we can think it is something wrong with Brad. But what I want to get across is that nothing is wrong it is just a part of bowling. There is no bowler on tour with more internal confidence than Brad Angelo. The truth is Brad has made himself more competitive in more environments. He is doing things to and with bowling balls and conditions that he never did before. He just has not gained the type of confidence he needs with all of his tricks.

Brad wouldn't be in the top 16 if he didn't have all the different tricks he uses. Brad is having to work very hard at everything he is doing right now. He isn't bowling his so called "A" game and he is bowling against bowlers who are. What Brad has done this year deserves credit.

I don't like to stamp bowlers with so called "A" games at this level. If the lanes and transition were letting Brad just show up and bowl it wouldn't be necessary to mention these things.

Enough of the explanation after a while it starts to sound like an excuse.

The progress is gaining confidence in anything and everything the lanes ask of a bowler. Never back down from the challenge and to put yourself in the right frame of mind when you step down into the settee. We can make excuses and say it is lane conditions or ball reaction but that is not the level of professionalism that Brad is working at.

The results can skew the realistic.

The only thing Brad needs to work on is he has no responsibility to live up to any body's expectations. The only thing you can control is strategy, execution and effort.

Keep the game as simple as possible and in the words of Tiger Woods just try to get better.

If you see how much better Brad's straighter game looks you would be just as proud of him as I am.

As a professional bowler you have to ride out the trends and get better at matching up to what ever they ask you to do. How many other bowlers who are considered bowlers who like to hook it made it to the Round of 8?
