This looked to be what you would expect an injured
player vs one of the top professionals of the year until
Rick started striking in game 3. You have to feel for
Rick and his misfortunes this year. He is trying for an
injury exemption, who knows how that will come out but
if he doesn't get the problem fixed it doesn't matter
anyway. Rick simply can not compete with his injury.
Mika will need to be ready to make quicker ball changes
in game 3 so carry in games 4 and 5 won't be a problem. |

It looked like the Tournament of Couch shot is out
again. Once he got the lane to his liking everything
went flush for a long time. Poor Patrick because he did
everything right, there just isn't much room between 580
and perfection in the last two games. |

This match showed what can happen when the players
transition the pattern the right way. Tom and Parker had
their side of the lane all to themselves and put on a
great show. Mr consistency Baker may have lost the match
but proved why he still a force on tour. He can strike
with the best of them. |

I am sure Lonnie would have likes a better pairing last
night at the "draw party" but looking back at the end of
the week It looks like you had to get some 250's or
better in the match if you wanted a chance to win.
Knowing the results of the tournament can make it
interesting to look back at the paths the players took
to get there. It certainly looks like the stars were
aligned for Chris this week. In all the years I have
watched Lonnie bowl the one common denominator is
sensitive and dramatic ball reactions to transitions. I
wish I could work with Lonnie during competition because
I think his fear of early friction and moves to stay
ahead of it are the demons he battles. He is awesome
when the lane settles down. |

Vince got the biggest laugh at the "Draw Party" when he
said he hoped the best "League Bowler" won. Well both
Mike and Vince made the conditions look like league.
Mike's ball went flush and awful lot but had it not been
for the occasional miss in Vince could have taken this
match further. But in the flavor of things... who knows
what would have happened after three games...league
bowlers don't bowl but 3 game a week. |

Who you bowl with in the Round of 32 is very important.
There are four bowlers on a pair and check this pairing
out. Brian Voss, Mike Machuga, Chris Collins, Amleto
Monacelli. All I can say is the lane and the thin
pattern never stood a chance. Too many bowlers who like
to chase it left unless you have the ability to stay
right of everybody. Problem with this pairing is no part
of the lane would go untouched. Straighter will
eventually be the best choice unless everybody started
out that way then it would be gravy left. See where I am
going at. This group of bowlers are no dummies and
Amleto is not starting to the right and Chris seems the
most comfortable in the track. Where where Brian and
Mike to go. Yuk! is all I can say with the transitions
on this pair. |

It looked like Brian tried to leave the gutter alone in
practice and then thought he could jump to the gutter
when the match started. He moved off the gutter by the
third frame. Mike was all over the place. It looked like
he wanted to stay left of everybody too soon. This
looked like a match where Mike and Brian were jockeying
around looking for the right place to be and quite
concerned about the effects of the other horses in the
race. I would have been too.
BV had a much superior look on the lane. MM was using
too many boards for a 50 foot pattern. And once he
committed to going at the pocket late in game three you
could tell he knew he had made a grave mistake. |

I can strike more than you was the theme of this match
up. Norm and Pete had the pair to themselves and I was
most impressed with how clean the ball was flying off of
Pete's hand. It is amazing at how friction effects a
players release. This was vintage Pete Weber. I love
Pete's game in this environment. Norm probably does to
if he isn't bowling him. Ball reaction wise this was
pretty close until Norm's ball started hitting flat more
often than Pete's.
Pete could be very dangerous in this weeks match up. |

Mike won the ball reaction contest on the lane. But
could not compete with Steve in the carry department or
the closed fame match. Steve's ball may have been weaker
on the lane and through the pins but he had one open in
the 4 games while Mike 4 splits through the nose between
strikes and 2 2-10 combinations.
This had to be very frustrating for Mike but Steve is
always dangerous when his ball reads friction it doesn't
need to bounce off of a hook spot not does it change
directions very dramatically to early friction. The ball
flies off of Steve's hand very well on low volume
patterns. His angles and hand are great match ups and
will be tough on anybody. |

No disrespect to David because he has skills but I don't
care what your rev rate it you can't be trying to create
revs with you thumb in the ball on the national tour. As
hard as Ryan looks like he is hitting up on the ball the
thumb is not a factor. Dave is hitting the ball from a
spot that will not read tour transitions well. It has
nothing to do with the patterns it has to do with the
transitions the players make of the pattern. If he wants
to get to the next level he will have to clean it up or
wait on the lane man to help out. |

I was a little surprised to see Wes force the issue left
considering how well he bowls against Walter in matches
against him. The focus for Sean was angles and getting
the ball off his hand as clean as he could. I was very
impressed with his ability to recognize the difference
because he wasn't perfect yet I saw him clean it up
before he moved left and grabbed it more. Nice job Sean.
By the way Sean and Wes were paired with Walter Ray
Williams Jr and Patrick Allen. |

You would have never though Patrick stood a chance
against Walter in watching the early games. But as soon
as Patrick got a look in game 3 everything turned
around. Walter started loosing his look and Patrick
looked to be dominant. What a great match this was when
Walter regained his look by using loft and speed to
avoid the early hook and maintain his angles. Game 5 was
a perfect climax to a great battle that would have been
perfect for TV. Thanks for the show guys. |

I really struggled in watching this match as I didn't
know who's ball reaction was worse. It looked like a
match of who could make their ball go more sideways down
lane. Which by the way doesn't work very well in this
environment. Oh it may look like the guys are hooking it
to some but none of the guys that are hooking it are
trying to maximize their hook.
I am not sure what Jason and Robert were thinking but
it wasn't right. |

Ritchie Allen seems to always have a good look on this
pattern. He seems to be following the break down on
every other shot. He wiggles with the pattern and is the
only player I know that gets away with too much grab. It
looks impressive against somebody who doesn't mess with
his laydown or in his case his loft down. I have to give
him credit for how many times his ball went flush but
too many things have to be right for him for my liking.
Congrats on another invitation to the T of C David and
best of luck next year. When watching the regional and
senior entrees into the T of C you can see a difference.
It is most easily seen when you are tracking shots.
Their carry is not at the same level. I used the works
weak a lot more often with the non exempt guys when
describing how the ball hit. |

Tommy is a master at over coming a slow start. I don't
like Tommy's look on the fresh, but just as he does
every week his look just gets better and better. Chief
has to be commended on his performance but he got a dose
of TJ carry late in the match. Nobody on tour can
match the type of pin reaction Tommy has. He gets the
light hit and the head pin off the left wall so much
that he can line up to it, and when his ball goes flush
he can go ahead and move left off of a strike instead of
a 4 pin or worse. |

Doug looked calm and in control when he gave the game
and match to Danny in the 10th frame of game 4. Who
knows what would have happened in game 5 but everybody
in the audience was shocked when a shot that looked to
be close enough off of his hand never picked up and
bucketed on his fill ball. |
