This week,
during the Dick Weber Open is a good week to discuss the
new lane machine being used on the PBA Tour because the
pattern being used this week is only possible because of
the new technology of the Brunswick Authority 22 lane
machine. Both the PBA and the bowlers were very anxious
to see the effect of the new technology. The
responsibility of PBA lane maintenance belongs to Matt
Miller. Matt was afforded only one week of training
before the start of the 05-06 tour in October. Adapting
the new technology and the patterns to match the lane
play characteristics of the PBA is a huge
responsibility. 64 bowlers have their eyes on Matt and
his decisions. Being the lane man for the PBA is a very
difficult position. Only one bowler will win each week
so at the end of the week 63 other bowlers are looking
for an answer and the first thing that pops up in their
minds is almost always the lane conditions. That means
Matt and his new technology is going to get a lot of
criticism. A Lane man not only has to be knowledgeable
and experience but mentally tough and thick skinned as
well. |
