Mark Scroggins
vs
Michael Machuga Picking winners
this week is like putting PGA professionals on a
putt-putt course with a rail to the hole and picking
the winner. Crazy week that will
produce crazy results. You can't line up for ball
reaction you have to line up to carry.
I would like to think Machuga has the advantage but
I am not sure if there is an advantage this week. |
Green 3
Sean Swanson
vs
Mitch Beasley
This looks like a Southwest Regional bracket. There
are only two guys in this quarter of the bracket
that are not originally from the Southwest Region.
I will be watching the match closely to learn as
much as I can about Sean.
Sean is on our Regional staff and is exempt from
last years Regional points race. He is bowling the
winner of the previous seasons SW region point race.

Green 2
|
Chris Barnes
vs
Mike Edwards. I look in my crystal
ball and I see clouds.
But I will go out on a limb and
say the Chris has the advantage because his ball
roll allows him to use the front part of the lane
more effectively than Mike. Since
it is cloudy and I am out on a limb I think the
match will be over in 4 |
Green 1
|
Norm Duke
vs
Eddie VanDaniker Eddie has been the
stud during qualifying.
Not good enough to beat the high
woman but good enough to beat the entire PBA men's
side. Crazy week. The woman have a
better look than the men and the rookies and
non-exempt players are every bit as good as the
seasoned professionals and Hall-of-Famers
Anybody could win |
Blue 4
|
Phino Page
vs
Pete Weber Take a look at the
matchups this week.
Rhino vs Pete
Eddie vs Norm
Todd vs Eugene
Patrick vs Rich
Lots of Seasoned pros bowling
against young pups. Normally you
would favor the wise veterans in this kind of
matchups but when you can close your eyes and get to
the pocket there is no advantage. |
Blue 3
|
Dino Castillo
vs
Ronnie Russell I think Ronnie has
the advantage because he got more sleep last night.
I did not leave until after midnight and Dino was
hanging with the boys and going strong.
Besides Ronnie's ball reads the front better, I
think that is an advantage but what the heck do I
know this week. I had one staffer make the top 32
Brad and Sean Rash are injured.
How's my week? |

Jason Lundquist
vs
Billy Oatman You have to see
Billy's van. He has it all decked out as a traveling
billboard. wrapped in bigger than
life action shots of Billy and his sponsors it He
will not be able to hide from his adoring fans.
Passion vs composure. Billy is very animated while
Jason seems to be very quiet. I am
suppose to favor Billy but you flip a coin. I am not
going to even worry about it |
Blue 1
|
Jim Tomek Jr
vs
Walter Ray Williams Jr I was told
Jim started the match with the whole back row in his
first 4 shots while Walter started with the front 4.
I see no need to think anything will change the rest
of the way except Jim is liable to split trying to
carry the back row. |

Mike Scroggins
vs
Mike Wolfe As much hold as there
was this week it was too much for Mike Scroggins to
play. He actually had to go a little right to left
to start carrying. He said he had problems carrying
until you went away with the ball just a little.
After starting out slow he made a strong finish to
get into match-play. Mike Wolfe has a good but a
little further down lane than I prefer this week.I
am with Mike on this one angles to carry are very
important and it is easy to get trapped. |
Black

|
Ken Simard
vs
Michael Haugen Jr Extreme
difference here. This match will show the difference
between the angles the women are able to play and
the men. Michael can play where the women are and
Ken could not. I favor the women's
reaction over the men if they play like they did
yesterday. I have to favor that
style after witnessing it all day yesterday. |
Black

|
Chris Loschetter
vs
Wes Malott I think Wes uses the
front better than Chris and both can play in the
same part of the lane if they want to. Which should
widen the area and give Wes a couple extra hits a
game with his special carry. Why I
am acting like any of that makes a difference this
week...not sure. I saw more half tens from the men
than I did the women. More revs is
not an advantage this week |
Black

|
Patrick Allen
vs
Rich Ferraro Lefty match that
Patrick is suppose to win. Patrick has proven to be
the best at following his own transition on the left
side of the lane. If this Ferraro kid wins I am
going to throw my hands in the air and say I give.
No way is he suppose to hang with Patrick in this
matchup. I have been waving the
white flag much of the week so don't be surprised if
the unbelievable happens this week |
Red 4
|
Brian LeClair
vs
Mike Devaney Gotta go with Mike
because he was up around the leaders most of the
week. I think Mike is the better sideways player and
I don't think Brian can play the front of the lane
properly. To me this is a mismatch for this week.
So watch Brian prove me wrong. If
one player is carrying better than the other which
is likely to be the case. There will be some
grumbling going on during this match. |
Red 3
|
Jack Jurek
vs
Robert Smith I favor Jack in this
matchup until Robert figures out how to move with
his new arsenal of balls. Robert
seems to be progressing but seeing things
differently under fire is always a challenge.
Jack is bowling very well and I am liking his lower
rev rate in this match. |
Red 2
|
Steve Harman
vs
Ritchie Allen Don't know much about
Steve except he hooks it. Ritchie
is the self proclaimed "THB" which stands for
typical house bowler. If that is
true he should be the obvious favorite because I
don't think league shots are easier than this week.
No wet/dry just a very easy lateral blend that
guides your ball to the pocket. |
Green
Round of 8
|
Chris Barnes
vs
Michael Machuga The best thing
about this match was when these two get together
there is going to be some intensity.
And there was and it came right down to the tenth
where fist pumps were flying and cocky stares were
meant for their opponent to see. In
the end I saw both players acknowledge that they
knew it was a great match.
Nice show Mike and Chris |
Blue
Round of 8
|
Pete Weber
vs
Walter Ray Williams Jr It is
unfortunate that Pete has to be exposed to Walter
Ray any time...but it is even worse on a condition
like this. Pete knew the outcome
before it started. And that had
nothing to do with the bowler vs bowler record. Pete
is not going to beat Walter with this much yank very
often |
Black
Round of 8
|
Chris Loschetter
vs
Mike Wolfe This is an example of
what I was talking about earlier. Mike is proving
his experience as he was able to adapt to the
different transition Chris and the pair were
creating. The match came down to the seventh game
and Mike had the front 9 and still needed the first
one in the 10th to win. He got it calmly... as Mike
always does everything calmly. Don't fool us Mike we
know how bad you want to bowl Chris |
Red
Round of 8
|
Mike Devaney
vs
Eugene McCune Mike Devaney returned
the favor of 4-0 after Eugene gave it to Ritchie.
Maybe Eugene did something wrong for him and
something right for Mike as Mike didn't shoot a game
under 255 in the match. Sometimes
you just get beat and you have to move on. No reason
to look for any wrinkles in this match as Eugene was
dry cleaned by Devaney. Hang it up and move on. |
Green
Round of 16
2
|
Michael Machuga
vs
Sean Swanson This would be a good
developmental match for Sean. Machuga is a
chaser...meaning he will jump all over the place
looking to create or effect the shot.
Mike's mind jumps around like a Mexican jumping
bean. If it is hot it is real good if not you can
expect anything. |
Green
Round of 16
1
|
Chris Barnes
vs
Norm Duke Prize match that should
have been available for everybody to see.
Both of these players knew it was going to be a high
scoring match and only one could win.
In the end all you can do is throw up your hands and
say. Do the conditions have to be this easy? |
Blue
Round of 16
2
|
Pete Weber
vs
Ronnie Russell Ronnie must have
been using Robert Smith's ball. He to lost his look
after two games. Everyone of Pete's
games were in the 220/230 range and that doesn't
necessarily have to win when the pace is this high.
Those 220/230 games are just par...I guess Ronnie
was sub par in this match up. And that ain't good
against Pete |
Blue
Round of 16
1
|
Jason Lundquist
vs
Walter Ray Williams Jr. How would
you feel if you were bowling Walter Ray Williams Jr.
in your first PBA National best of 7 match-play
tournament. Hopefully Jason enjoyed
it and learned something from it. Walter has always
been a good teacher. Lesson number
one is in math. If a bowler never misses the pocket
or a spare what are his chances of winning. |
Black
Round of 16
2
|
Ken Simard
vs
Mike Wolfe Mike Wolfe proved to be
the seasoned professional in this match as he made
all the right moves through transition.
Oh how Ken had to feel. It isn't
luck it is experience that got Mike by Ken.
Mike Wolfe is certainly at the top of his game right
now |
Black
Round of 16
1
|
Patrick Allen
vs
Chris Loschetter You can see how
confident Chris Lo is getting. Not sure if he is
still using the best strategy but he is certainly
getting by on confidence.
Confidence and commitment are two very important
elements that a professional must develop to succeed
out here.
I am not cutting on Chris I am
complementing him |
Red
Round of 16
2
|
Robert Smith
vs
Mike Devaney Where was I during
this match. I never saw one ball go down the lane.
I guess I should say where was
Robert after the second game in this match
A great start with 2 games over 240 and he
disappeared for the next four and let Mike win
with 3 pretty mediocre games |
Red
Round 16
1
|
Eugene McCune
vs
Ritchie Allen four and out may look
pretty easy when you see the 4-0 but Ritchie was in
3 of the 4 games. When Eugene has
his look you aren't going to line up an play the
lanes like he does. He gets to play in his own
wheelhouse. Sometimes that
wheelhouse doesn't have any bearings but they seem
well lubed right now |
Red 1
|
Todd Book
vs
Eugene McCune These players use the
mid-lane differently. Todd does it sideways while
Eugene can do it either way. Eugene got there on a
couple big games and a bunch of mediocre games. Todd
had a better natural matchup. I
tried to talk to Eugene this morning about matching
up through transition and it will be interesting to
see if it makes a difference. |
