The first Round Robin format of the year and now that it is over I would rather talk about the fact that we actually got to see the position round excitement this format can offer. There hasn't been much to the position rounds in this format over the last couple years. Make sure you visit the PBA web site and see the details. I wanted to highlight the excitement on here but it looks like I missed out on an opportunity this week. I was just too busy to keep up with every thing. The best match I watched this week was my son battling Ryan Abel after the cut to the TV show. I didn't get to do much watching as I was working with other players and their arsenals while all the excitement was going on. I have some very promising talent to work with this year and one of them that I expect to make some noise by the end of the year is PJ Haggerty. PJ has what it takes mentally and has got to this point doing some things that aren't quite right against this field of bowlers. His equipment choices through transitions are opposite of what he needs, his hand is too strong at the release point, we will need to reduce the dominant hand and free up the swing momentum. Keep in mind I didn't want to throw this at him in the first part of the swing because I am not going to take a talented player who got to this level and tell him he is doing things wrong. I have spent most of the early weeks watching him from a distance to get an idea of his makeup and experience level. I am ready to start the detail work with him. I like to do that by talking about lane play and transitions, and discussing how this player and that player deal with it and why they are able to do it the way they do. At this level it is not about repeating shot. Your wasting your time out here if you can't do that. The difference is recognizing and adapting better than the others. Some games need to be cleaned up to match the field as much as it does to the patterns. That is where PJ is at. PJ has done a good job of cleaning up his hand at the bottom. I can tell he is confused through transitions because it doesn't match his instinctive choices. That is why I like to focus on lane play and transitions and deliver the physical things in smaller doses. Keep your eyes on this kid, he has what it takes to get to the next level. Oh by the way Ryan Abel taught my son a lesson but Kenny held his own. Thank you Ryan for showing that cocky kid where he is at. He couldn't even beat the old man earlier in the week. My son's bowling friend is Kelsey Muther who received a lot of comments about her skill level. I can tell she has been working on her swing as it impressed many of the pros. Look for this girl in collegiate bowling in about 4-5 years from now. She is a serious Shocker fan but those of you reading this that are associated with women's bowling ought to check this girl out. If we can get her head on straight she is going to reap the rewards. Not that it is bad but it isn't prime time.
