I am not going to allow any of you to skip the most important understanding of our sport until you realize what is so unique and great about the sport of bowling. Every lesson I give now starts with this explanation and once you hear it you will understand why.

The essence of Bowling is not like any other sport. And if you want to get good at this sport you will learn it and believe it. If you don't...it will come back to haunt you down the road.

Bowling is the only sport that is a battle with an invisible course.

Imagine any sport you wish...visualize not being able to see the obstacles, and just to make it a little more challenging...picture those invisible obstacles moving around on you while you compete. I would love to watch a round of golf where the athlete can not see the sand trap, pound, tree or other obstacles on their course. Tiger might get a little more frustrated after he got to the end of round one with a stubbed toe, bruised forehead, and wet sand in his pockets.
Picture football where they mowed the field in patches and added a couple slick spots here and there. Why do they make the court, backboard, rim and goal so precise, I think they ought to change the size of the rim every now and then or put some lubricant on the backboard. Quit wiping up all the sweat on the court put something on there to make it more challenging.  Baseball, tennis, hockey,...you name it they spend too much time making everything too exact and visible. I love many sports and give the athletes of those sports respect, but lets not be confused with how challenging the invisible can be
.

There is a common denominator amongst all great bowlers and it is mental fortitude.

Don't let yourself get confused by the lack of education and development in our sport the only magic is between your ears. Technology is important but only a tenth of what you really need to know. I was told a story by an Team USA and United States Olympic Committee member that is prove of what I already believed.
The USOC tests all Olympic athletes psychologically. Bowling is no different, our athletes have been tested and compared to all other Olympic athletes. The findings surprised a few including the individuals who first tested the group of athletes representing our sport and Team USA.
The story has the examiner running into a training session and pulling the coach over to the side after the initial testing and reporting to the coach in private about the test results.
The coach asked the examiner to tell the bowling Team USA members what he had found out.
What the examiner found out was that the bowling athletes graded higher than any other group of athletes in any of the other 43 Olympic sports at that time.
Surprised and proud of course.
But to further make a point the USOC psychological testing returned the same results for three successive tests with a different group of bowling athletes each and every time.

The moral of the story is that reaching the epic levels of our sport is based on your mental fortitude and artistic ability to "feel" and "blend" with an invisible course that is constantly changing.

The unknowledgeable viewer sees a ball rolling down the lanes and pins falling. The challenge we have in developing and marketing the number one participant sport in the world is educating and teaching the rush we feel inside. Sure everybody likes to knock things over...that is human nature...but if you want to get better than the rest you best start out knowing what you need to develop.

When a developing bowler understands that he or she needs to develop repeatability, versatility, creativity, recognition skills, confidence, and commitment...athletes, parents, and teachers around the world realize just how special and unique the sport of bowling is.

An athlete can not complain about the lane conditions and other elements unless he or she is willing to admit they haven't learned or understood the essence of our sport.

Before we move on to another subject please feel free in sending me a note with any confusion or questions you might have. At that time I will provide you with a link to the next phase of your development
